Pikachu is Ash's starter Pokémon, given to him by Professor Oak.
Personality
Initially, Pikachu showed himself to be a rude and aggressive Pokémon, attacking a crowd of people for no reason and refusing to listen to Ash. However, when Ash saved Pikachu from a flock of Spearow, he became extremely loyal to Ash.
Pikachu is generally friendly to humans and Pokémon he hasn't met before. Pikachu took a particular liking to Misty very quickly, and he has retained this liking ever since.
Pikachu has a particular fondness for ketchup, but he will eat and enjoy almost any food.
Pikachu, Meowth and Meowthtwo were the only Pokémon not to fight in the giant battle of originals vs clones, choosing to stand there and take Pikachutwo's attacks.
When Pikachu temporarily developed amnesia, he became very believing to everything Team Rocket told him and became loyal to them. However, after recovering, he regained his original personality.
Battle Skills
Pikachu is known to be very powerful for a Pikachu, with Meowth saying that Pikachu's power "far exceeds its evolutionary level". Pikachu has shown himself able to fight on par with Legendary and Mega Pokémon, such as defeating Brandon's Regice and Korrina's Mega Lucario, and drawing with Tobias's Latios.
The possibility of evolving into Raichu was brought up to Pikachu after being defeated by Lt. Surge's Raichu, when Nurse Joy gave Ash a Thunder Stone. Ash allowed Pikachu to decide, but he smacked the Thunder Stone away, expressing his desire to not evolve and later defeated Raichu using moves that Pikachu knew that Raichu didn't learn as it evolved too soon to do so. Much later, Pikachu fought Sho's Raichu and fought on par with him, until Raichu used Hyper Beam at point blank range, severely injuring Pikachu. While he was recovering, Ash brought up the subject of Pikachu evolving again. Once again, Pikachu chose not to evolve, and defeated Raichu in a rematch with a combination of speed and spinning techniques learned from Dawn.
